An Indian court has twice sentenced an Indian man, Suruj Kumar, to life in prison for killing his wife by releasing a poisonous cobra in bed. According to the police investigation, Suruj was harassing his wife and his family for dowry.
According to the BBC, the court convicted Suruj on Monday for leaving a snake in his wife Uthra’s bed while he was sleeping.
Police arrested Suruj Kumar after he died of a snake bite last year. Earlier in Uthra’s death, his family filed a murder charge against Suruj.
Uthra, 25, was found dead in her home in May last year. A cobra bit him on the bed. His family members suspected it was a murder. He had recovered from a snake bite once before.
According to the police, Suruj’s hand was behind the two incidents of snake bites. He made a confessional statement after arresting a man who had helped Suruj collect the snakes. This unravels the mystery.
According to the report, the police submitted a thousand page investigation report to the court regarding the murder. The report details the plot of the assassination and its execution.
Meanwhile, the public prosecutor (PP) described it as “rare even in rare cases” while presenting arguments in court. He demanded the death penalty for Suruj. The judge agreed that this was a rare occurrence. However, he sentenced Suruj to life imprisonment twice. At the same time he was fined five lakh rupees.
